The Port of Huntsville (POH) Public Safety Department is celebrating 30 years of dedicated service in 2026, marking three decades of protecting people, property, and critical infrastructure at North Alabama’s most vital transportation and economic hub.

Established in 1996, the department was created to provide comprehensive, on-site public safety services tailored to the unique needs of an airport and intermodal complex. Since then, the POH Public Safety Department has evolved into a highly trained, cross-functional team of public safety officers who serve simultaneously as law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical responders.

“For 30 years, the Port of Huntsville Public Safety Department has been a constant presence behind the scenes, ensuring safety, readiness, and rapid response every day,” said Joey Ceci, Board Chair for the Port of Huntsville “Their professionalism and adaptability are essential to the Port’s operations and to the confidence of the traveling public, our tenants, and our community.”

The POH officers protect Huntsville International Airport, the International Intermodal Center, and the Jetplex Industrial Park, responding to a wide range of incidents from medical emergencies and fire response to law enforcement and aviation security operations. The department works closely with local, state, and federal mutual aid partners to maintain compliance with industry standards and support regional emergency preparedness.

Over the past three decades, the department has expanded its capabilities, training, and technology to meet the growing demands of aviation and commerce, while maintaining a strong focus on customer service and community engagement. Officers regularly participate in public safety education, outreach events, and recognition initiatives that highlight the human side of their work.
