About the International Intermodal Center (IIC)
The International Intermodal Center (IIC) at the Port of Huntsville is a premier inland port facility offering seamless integration of air, rail, and highway transportation. Strategically located in North Alabama, the IIC specializes in the efficient handling of international and domestic cargo, providing a centralized hub for receiving, transferring, storing, and distributing goods.
Air
The Air Cargo Terminal at Huntsville International Airport boasts nearly 300,000 square feet dedicated to air cargo operations, including three separate coolers for cold storage (5,250, 11,000, and 11,000 sq. ft.) to accommodate pharmaceuticals and other temperature-sensitive products. The center operates 24/7, ensuring timely handling of shipments. Parallel 12,600-foot and 10,000-foot runways permit simultaneous flight operations during instrument conditions. Huntsville International Airport is ranked 21st in the continental U.S. for international air cargo volume.
Rail
Equipped with a five-mile rail spur connected to the Norfolk Southern Railroad mainline, the IIC offers direct access to both East and West Coast seaports. The facility features two 45-ton overhead gantry cranes and has parking capacity for 1,100 wheeled units, with stacking capability for over 500 loads.
Highway
Located alongside I-565, the IIC provides uncongested access to the interstate highway system, serving as a direct logistics channel for businesses across North Alabama and beyond.
