In 2023, Huntsville International Airport became one of only five U.S. airports selected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to participate in the UAS Detection and Mitigation Research Program. This initiative, which began in 2021, explores advanced technologies to detect and manage UAS activity in restricted airspace, reducing potential risks posed by drones near commercial air traffic.

UAS Operation Rules & Safety Requirements

All UAS operations within 5 miles of any airport, including at Huntsville International Airport, must adhere to FAA guidelines to maintain the safety of our airspace. Authorizations:

Commercial operators are required to obtain FAA authorization before flying in controlled airspace zones around the airport. Hobbyist pilots must follow the FAA’s safety guidelines for recreational flyers, including notifying the airport and air traffic control tower if operating within 5 miles of an airport.
